The island of Thassos is also known as the "Emerald Island", because it combines the green of the pine forests, the green of the olive trees and the blue of the crystal clear seas on the beaches that embrace it.
But Thassos is not only its beaches but also its rich history, its mineral wealth, its excellent products, its traditional architecture and the unique hospitality of its people.
Although it seems to have been inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC, in the 7th century BC, Telesicles from Paros, was given the oracle to build on the island "Aeria" (ancient name of Thassos) a city visible from everywhere. And he built Limenas which was and is the capital of the island. Remnants of the past such as the ancient market, the ancient theatre, the temples of Hercules, Artemis and Poseidon in the city of Limenas still inspire the admiration of visitors.
Since ancient times, the island produced white marble of astonishing quality. If we consider the strategic position of the island between Anatolia and northern Greece, we understand why Persians, Athenians, Spartans, Romans, Venetians, Genoese, pirates, Turks and Bulgarians passed through the island as raiders or conquerors.
You can learn about history and culture by visiting one of the museums, such as the Archaeological Museum in Limenas, the Folklore Museum (in Limenas, Theologos, Kallirachi and Limenaria), the Art Museum in Potamia, the Traditional Olive Oil Mill in Panagia, the Olive-Oil Museum and the Beekeeping Cooperative in Skala Prinos.
In the mountain villages of Theologo, Kazavitis,, Maries, Panagia and Potamia, which are on the slopes of Mount Ypsario, you will admire the local Macedonian architecture, stone-built bridges, picturesque chapels and if you wish you can taste local goat meat in their cool squares. Known for their deliciousness, the island's products such as olives, wine, tsipouro, fresh fish and of course honey from pine trees will enhance your tasting experience.
The island's beaches are many, with more or less traffic, but all beautiful, mostly with sandy beaches and relatively shallow waters and surrounded by pine forests.
To the east, Makryammos, Saliara, Golden Beach, Skala Potamias, Skala Panagias, Kinira, Paradisos are some of the beaches that will be unforgettable if you visit them.
On the western side, Agios Antonios beach, Atspas, Kallirachi, and further north Platana, Skala Rachoniou have their fans too.
Wherever you go, with so much beauty that Thassos has, it is bound to become the island of your heart.
